The rise in electric vehicle (EV) ownership among Motability Scheme customers is significant, with over 50,000 EVs already on the road. This number is set to increase as more manufacturers introduce electric models, phasing out petrol and diesel vehicles. As EV adoption grows, so does the infrastructure supporting it. According to Zapmap, the UK saw a 47% increase in public chargepoints between May 2023 and March 2024, reaching over 59,000. They predict the UK will have 100,000 charging stations by August 2025.
Leasing an electric vehicle via the Motability Scheme comes with a worry-free package that includes access to Motability Go Charge. This innovative solution provides access to over 45,000 chargepoints nationwide, all manageable through a single app and card. Additionally, for first-time EV leasers, we arrange and cover the cost of a home chargepoint installation, subject to suitability. If installing a home chargepoint isn't feasible, we offer a subscription to the bp pulse network, the UK's largest public charging network. Experience the ease and convenience of electric driving with our comprehensive support and seamless charging solutions at SMC.
Requirements for Installation
To get a home chargepoint installed, you'll need off-street parking next to your home, such as a driveway or garage. If you don’t own your home or if it’s a freehold flat or leasehold, you'll also need to obtain permission for the installation.
Choosing the Right Location
Ensure your chargepoint is installed in a location that provides enough space for you to move around and plug in your electric vehicle comfortably. Your chargepoint installer will guide you through the process and address any questions you may have.
Cost of Installation
First-Time Installation
If this is your first fully electric car on the Motability Scheme, we will arrange and cover the cost of a home chargepoint and a standard installation. This ensures you can start your electric journey without any upfront costs for setting up your home charging station.
Subsequent Installations and Non-Standard Setups
If you've previously had a fully electric car on the Motability Scheme or require a non-standard installation, you will need to cover the cost. Non-standard installations may include additional work beyond the basic setup, such as extensive wiring or special mounting requirements.
Start Your Electric Journey with Ease
By meeting the installation requirements and understanding the associated costs, you can enjoy the convenience of charging your electric vehicle at home. Partner with us at Motability to make your transition to electric driving as smooth and cost-effective as possible.
Access to the UK's Largest Public Charging Network
A subscription to the bp pulse network provides access to the UK’s largest public charging network, including 3,000 rapid and ultra-fast chargepoints. This is an ideal solution for those who cannot install a home chargepoint.
How We'll Support You
First-Time Electric Lease
If you are leasing your first fully electric car on the Motability Scheme and cannot install a home chargepoint, we will provide you with a subscription to the bp pulse network. This subscription grants access to numerous public chargepoints, offering better charging rates, and some are even free.
Subsequent Electric Leases
If you had a bp pulse subscription with your previous lease, we’ll offer it to you again. However, if you previously had a home chargepoint, you will not be eligible for a bp pulse subscription through us for your next vehicle.
Motability Go Charge Card
Alongside the bp pulse subscription, you'll receive the Motability Go Charge card. This card allows you to charge at over 45,000 chargepoints, ensuring you pay no more than the chargepoint operator’s ‘pay as you go’ tariff. This makes it simple and cost-effective to keep your electric vehicle charged while on the go.
Start Your Electric Journey with Motability
By providing access to the bp pulse network and the Go Charge card, we ensure that your transition to electric driving is smooth and convenient. Whether you are leasing your first electric car or renewing your lease, Motability is here to support your electric journey every step of the way.
Motability Go Charge, often referred to simply as "Go Charge," is a new electric car card and app developed in collaboration with our partner, Paua. This innovative solution is designed to make charging your electric vehicle on the go convenient and hassle-free.
How Does It Work?
When you lease a new electric car through the Motability Scheme, Go Charge becomes part of your worry-free package. During the application process, your dealer will inquire if you'd like to include Go Charge. Once confirmed, you'll receive a welcome pack in the mail around the time you collect your car.
Benefits of Go Charge
Experience the future of electric driving with Motability Go Charge, and enjoy the freedom and convenience of easy access to charging wherever you go.
As electric vehicles become increasingly popular, the Motability Scheme offers a growing selection of electric cars. Understanding the different types of electric and hybrid vehicles can be overwhelming for beginners. Here’s a guide to help you navigate the options:
Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs)
BEVs are fully electric vehicles powered solely by an electric battery. They produce zero emissions and require charging from an external source, such as a home chargepoint or public charging station.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs)
PHEVs combine a traditional combustion engine with an electric battery that can be recharged by plugging into an external source. They offer the flexibility of running on electric power for shorter journeys and switching to the petrol or diesel engine for longer trips.
Mild Hybrid Electric Vehicles (MHEVs)
MHEVs use a smaller battery and an electric motor to support the combustion engine. The electric motor cannot power the vehicle on its own but helps improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Like HEVs, MHEVs recharge the battery through regenerative braking.
To help you understand these different vehicle types, the Motability Scheme offers an informative animation that provides a beginner’s guide to electric and hybrid vehicles.
