Barnard & Brough Nissan Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Barnard & Brough Nissan celebrated it's 40th Anniversary in November, so we've taken a little look into the history of the longest established Nissan dealership in the UK.

  • Barnard & Brough was first established in 1957 by Ken Barnard and John Brough. The business originally sold motorbikes, then became a Ford franchise in 1960.

In 1971 B&B became a Datsun dealer, before Datsun rebranded as Nissan in the UK in 1984. During this time, Octav Botner was the sole importer of Nissan vehicles in the UK. Botner, a Ukranian businessman and entrepreneur, spent four years as a political prisoner in the 1930's before fighting with the French resistance during the Second Wold War.

Botner played a key role in Nissan's growth into the UK and Europe, but in 1990 he relinquished control to Nissan Japan, and the Japanese took over distribution into the UK.

Barnard & Brough were the fourth dealer appointed by Nissan Japan, hence our dealer number, 1004.

Dealers 1001, 1002 and 1003 no longer exist, and so Barnard & Brough Nissan is proudly the longest established Nissan dealer in the UK.

  • Director, Gus Wakeford celebrates the history of Barnard & Brough leading up to the present day:

"What an incredible journey Barnard & Brough has had, and we are immensely proud to be a part of it. From its inauguration in 1957 to its current evolution within the SLM family. Maintaining the same qualities of customer & staff care as we move forward into 2022."

Today, we are one of the leading dealers in West Sussex offering an impressive and wide-ranging selection of new and used cars at our Haywards Heath dealership. We're a proud supporter of local charities, present opportunities for employment amongst the local community and still to this day remain passionate about selling cars and providing excellent customer service.
