Cascada makes a splash
  • “British drivers have a soft spot for a cabriolet,” writes Andrew English in The Telegraph, "and the latest is the Vauxhall Cascada.” He says the Cascada will compete in the heart of the premium market, directly against the Audi A5, being larger than the Astra Twin Top, which is “a good start”. “It’s a good looking car, unashamedly modern with a cab-forward style. It looks good with the hood up and when it’s down, there’s grand flat decking and classy proportions, which leaves the impression of a car that’s more expensive than it is.” But English’s favourite part is “the massive powered fabric hood, which raises and lowers under its automatic tonneau in 17 seconds at speeds up to 30mph. It’s thatched with a polyester acoustic and thermal insulated lining and is something to behold. You’ll not see such a device outside of a Bentley.” He says Cascada is “nicely put together, with well matched soft trim panels and classy instrumentation,” with “lovely butterscotch leather options,” and comfortable and supportive seats. The new 1.6 is “quiet and vibration free,” and the “responsive” engine “likes to rev”, yet the economy “doesn't suffer unduly”. “The manual ’box’s change quality is sweet and ratios are well spaced,” and the 19-inch wheels “ride potholes without crashing”. “Damping control is excellent and Cascada is a pleasure to drive briskly, with well-weighted and communicative steering, powerful and linear feeling brakes and and a well-tuned, loping stride that allows you to cover distances fast without feeling strained or tired.” In summary, English says: “Cascada is a charming and well engineered cabrio that deserves to do well.”
