Insignia tops Mondeo in head-to-head
  • Boasting “a fresh look, more kit, lower emissions and competitive pricing”, the “updated” Vauxhall Insignia comes out on top in Auto Express’s head-to-head with of its “arch rival”, the Ford Mondeo. The 2.0CDTi ecoFLEX test model “excels” on the motorway: “It has a more comfortable ride than the Mondeo, even with our car’s optional 18-inch wheels, and it’s quieter, too, with less engine noise in the cabin. The powerful diesel doesn’t need to be worked as hard as the Ford’s smaller engine, which helps economy, while the 70-litre fuel tank gives a range of nearly 800 miles.” The two cars are evenly matched when it comes to equipment, with “sat-nav and climate control” included on both. Although the Mondeo also comes fitted with powered rear windows and front and rear parking sensors, the “£1,646 difference in list price” in favour of the Insignia means that “you can specify these options and still come in well under the Mondeo’s asking price”. The test concludes that “in terms of comfort, style, emissions, performance and value, the Insignia is very attractive indeed”, with “the slightly superior kit list and extended options” enough to “earn the car victory”.
